June 22, 2001
Friday's
activities focused on the mission and business of the NRHS.
BOARD
OF DIRECTORS MEETING: Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM was the
Board of Directors Meeting in the Mississippi Ballroom of the
Millennium Hotel, our headquarters for the convention. Highlights
of the meeting:
- The
NRHS Railway Heritage Grants Review Board announced the
recipients of the
2001 Grants.
- The financial status of the society is
sound.
- Washington,
D.C. Chapter NRHS was awarded the bid to hold the 2003 convention
in Baltimore, MD in conjunction with the Railway & Locomotive
Historical Society. The convention will coincide with the
Baltimore & Ohio Museum's "Fair of the Iron Horse",
a celebration of the 175th anniversary of the beginning
of the B&O railroad. The festival is expected to have
an event similar to the B&O Railroad's 1927 "Fair
of the Iron" horse, a celebration and fair devoted
to marking 100 years of steam locomotives and of course
the B&O Railroad. Preliminary convention plans also
include several rail trips on Amtrak and commuter or other
local lines.
- Northstar
Chapter NRHS was awarded the 2004 convention to be held
in the Twin Cities. Preliminary plans for the convention
include a dinner train, excursions with the 261, and non-rail
activities.
- Various
officers and directors also gave reports on a wide variety
of updates and initiatives the NRHS is involved in, including
the Rails and Trails program, the NRHS Bulletin, and the
web site.
- Updates
on other Board of Directors meetings were provided, as well
as on the 2002 Convention in Williams, Arizona.

ANNUAL
MEMBERSHIP MEETING: Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM was the
annual membership meeting of the NRHS, which was also held Mississippi
Ballroom of the Millennium hotel. This is a formal meeting required
by the by-laws of the NRHS. Highlights of the meeting:
-
President
Molloy gave the Annual Report of the Society to the membership
for the year 2000. The report included activities and financial
status. The state of the society is strong.
-
President
Molloy also introduced to the membership the Officers and
Service Directors that were present at the meeting .
-
The
floor was opened up for questions and answers. One of the
major concerns addressed with the changing face of the society
and the need to address reaching out to new members. President
Molly and NRHS Webmaster addressed how the Society is addressing
this issue and encouraged the membership to continue to
submit ideas and suggestions on this issue. NOTE: The NRHS
Web Site is one of the Society's initiatives to show the
depth and breadth of activities of the NRHS and the significant
benefits of belonging to the NRHS.
- The
membership also approved a change in the dues structure
that streamlines the membership process. The 1/2 year dues
period for June - August was eliminated. As it turns out
few people join the NRHS during this period.
