Seminars --Friday, June 22 - 9:00am-10:30 & 10:30am-noon - Ticket Price FREE

Conventioneers will learn about some focused topics and issues in rail history. All seminars held at the Convention Hotel. Each seminar will be given once.

Scheduled Topics are:

  • Program A - Barriger Railroad Library - John W. Barriger III was President of the Monon, then the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie, and finally the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. He left a treasure of records and photographs he took personally. Also, there is material on other railroads. This program will outline library contents and how to access this material. Presented by Mr. Gregory Ames, Curator, John W. Barriger III Railroad Library.
  • Program B - Chicago-St. Louis High Speed Rail - This is a program of railroad history in the making - and steps have already been taken toward bringing about this service improvement. The program will focus on the concept, planning and timetable operation of the new high-speed corridor. Presenter TBD.
  • Program C - Citizen Advocacy in Light Rail Transit Projects - The first St. Louis light rail line began operation in August, 1993. The Illinois extension is scheduled to open soon. Engineering is now in progress on a line extending from the Forest Park station to Shrewsbury. This presentation will describe how a citizen organization rallies public and political support for improving mass transit. Presented by Mr. Thomas Shrout, Executive Director of Citizens for Modern Transit.
  • Program D - The Amazing Eads Bridge - In 1874, Eads Bridge was officially inaugurated. Built by one of America's greatest engineers, James Buchanan Eads, it was built with a new strong steel that allowed longer bridge spans. Skeptics predicted the bridge would collapse. But Ead's structure has withstood the test of time, and is now used by Metrolink trains to cross the Mississippi River. Presenter is Mr. John McCarthy, Senior Project Manager, Sverdrup Corporation.
  • Program E - 1522 Steam Locomotive Restoration - Third Time is the Charm! - The updating of Frisco Locomotive 1522 was notable for the quality of the restoration and the organizational achievements of the St. Louis Steam Train Association (SLSTA). Later improvements have made this locomotive better than new. Presenters are Mr. Robert Meier, Mr. Wellington Lazier and Mr. Don Wirth, all of the SLSTA.
  • Program F - The Missouri-Kansas-Texas (KATY) Railroad - The history, operation and equipment of the venerable Katy, now part of the Union Pacific Railroad, will be the focus of the presentation. Presented by Mr. Raymond George, Katy Historical Society.
  • Program G - Wabash Historical Society - The Wabash Railroad was unique in that it operated out of St. Louis as both an Eastern and Western railroad. This program will concentrate on railroad operation from the steam era until its merger into the Norfolk and Western in 1964. Presented by members of the Wabash Railroad Historical Society.
  • Program H - The Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (TRRA) - Ever wonder how freight cars are interchanged with other railroads? This program will trace typical car movements through the maze of St. Louis rail yards. Presented by Mr. Larry Thomas, Editor for the TRRA Historical and Technical Society.
