George L. Carter
About Our Chapter
The George L. Carter Chapter of the NRHS, is dedicated to preserving railroad history by collecting oral histories of local Southern Appalachian railroads, including the Clinchfield, Southern, and the ET&WNC “Tweetsie”. We hold monthly meetings at the Johnson City Railroad Experience, 207 N. Boone Street, Johnson City, TN. Our meetings are on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 pm, except for December, and visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings and participate in our activities. We offer quarterly regional rail fanning excursions to various venues ranging from a train ride and lunch on a river boat in the spring, to seeing the fall colors while riding the rails in the mountains.
As a part of our commitment to preserving railroad history, the Chapter provides personnel support by supplying docents to assist in staffing the Johnson City Railroad Experience during normal operating hours and for special events hosted by the JCRE. Many of our members actively participate in local activities within the surrounding communities as representatives of not only the George L. Carter Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, but also the Mountain Empire Model Railroaders.
